Iranian citizen Shahram Poursafi has been charged with "plot to murder" former United States National Security Advisor John Bolton (pictured), the US Department of Justice revealed on Wednesday.

The DoJ claimed that Poursafi was a member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and that he worked on IRGC's behalf when he "attempted to pay individuals in the United States $300,000 to carry out the murder in Washington, D.C. or Maryland."

The killing would have been carried out "likely in retaliation for the January 2020 death of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps - Qods Force (IRGC-QF) commander Qasem Soleimani," the US Justice Department alleged.
