Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Leo Varadkar admitted on Friday that he regrets that the Northern Ireland Protocol from the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement was signed without the support of all the communities in that region, namely unionists and nationalists.
"Economically, broadly speaking, the protocol is working: there's no hard border between north and south; the single market's integrity has been protected; the Northern Ireland economy is outperforming the UK economy. But I can understand how unionist politicians feel that the protocol has lessened the links, weakened the union between Northern Ireland and Britain," he told BBC during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
Earlier this week, also in Davos, Varadkar expressed his hopes the deal on the protocol will be reached soon as he believes that his United Kingdom counterpart Rishi Sunak and the latter's government "seem to be very serious about coming to an agreement."
