United States House Speaker Mike Johnson said Republican representatives will "re-group and come up with another solution" after their government spending bill was defeated earlier in the day. If a funding proposal is not adopted, the government will shut down on Saturday.
Johnson blamed the House Democrats for the bill's failure. "It’s very disappointing to us that all but two Democrats voted against aid to farmers and ranchers, against disaster relief, against all these bipartisan measures that had already been negotiated and decided upon," he said. However, Democrats accused the Republicans of abandoning previously agreed-upon bipartisan legislation when President-elect Donald Trump came out against it.
