The United States Steel Corporation announced on Wednesday that its employees will hold a rally today at the company's tower in Pittsburgh to urge "elected officials in Pennsylvania and across the nation" to support the upcoming $14.9 billion takeover deal with Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel.
According to US Steel Chief Executive Officer David Burritt, the planned transaction would help keep thousands of people employed by keeping the company's blast furnace facilities. He also warned that the deal could keep the company from potential closure.
The rally follows United States Vice President Kamala Harris' opposition to the proposed transaction, as she highlighted the importance of US Steel remaining "American-owned and American-operated." Former US President Donald Trump also showed his disapproval of the Japanese steel giant acquiring US Steel back in February, saying he would "block it instantaneously."
