French President Emmanuel Macron accepted the resignation of the country's Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and the government he led, the French presidency said on Tuesday.
The outgoing government will play the role of caretaker administration until a new executive is appointed. Macron previously urged Attal to remain on post and called on the "Republican bloc" to build a coalition to break the political deadlock.
Although the left-wing New Popular Front coalition won last week's snap election, it did not secure a majority in the National Assembly. As a result, a period of uncertainty has emerged to determine which coalition will ultimately form the new government.
