The Metropolitan Police issued a statement on Tuesday, saying it has made 50 referrals for fixed penalty notices following the Downing Street parties during the coronavirus lockdowns. United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as well as Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, will be penalized over COVID-19 lockdown breaches.
The investigation is meant to look into 12 gatherings in Downing Street and Whitehall. The parties were reportedly organized at 10 Downing Street during the nationwide lockdown due to the pandemic.
The police earlier said it will not disclose any further information about individuals that attended gatherings including parties at the residence of the prime minister, as it could affect the ongoing investigation.
