Interpol says Meng resigns as president

The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) said on Sunday its President Meng Hongwei stepped down from the position after Chinese authorities announced he is under investigation in the country on suspicion of "violating the law."

Meng, who also served as a vice minister of public security in China, was reported missing earlier in the week after traveling to the country and French authorities launched an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Meng's wife claimed he sent her a message signaling he was in danger.

Ex-Interpol chief pleads guilty to bribery charges
The former head of Interpol Meng Hongwei (pictured) pleaded guilty to bribery in a court hearing on Thursday, Chinese media reported. Meng disappeared last September during a visit to China, where it was later revealed he was arrested on bribery charges. Prosecutors claim the ex-chief of Interpol took 14.5 million yuan ($2.1 million) in bribes and was expelled from the Communist Party in March.
