Chinese authorities confirmed on Sunday that Interpol President Meng Hongwei, who is also a vice minister of public security in China, is under investigation in the country on suspicion he broke the law.
China's watchdog for corruption, the National Supervision Commission, stated that Meng is "suspected of violating the law and is currently under the monitoring and investigation." Beijing did not specify in what way Meng is believed to have broken the law.
On Friday, Meng's wife reported he was missing a week after he traveled to China and French authorities launched a probe into the matter. Furthermore, Interpol asked Chinese authorities to provide official information on the status of the Interpol head. Meanwhile, Meng's wife claimed he sent her a message signaling he was in danger.
