Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) shouted at United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan during their first meeting held in September 2021, unnamed sources briefed on the conversation told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.
The crown prince became upset after the American government official mentioned the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi and afterward told Sullivan to never bring up the killing again. During the heated exchange, MbS also stressed that the US should not ask for help from Riyadh on oil production anymore.
Due to this and several other issues, the relations between the two countries have only worsened since then and attempts by US officials to ease the tensions have only had limited success, according to the newspaper. Saudi sources told the WSJ that the US is worried that Riyadh may look to extend its relationships with China and Russia instead.
